Joey Contreras, who left his mark prosecuting racketeering cases against the Texas Mexican Mafia and the Texas Syndicate, was promoted to head the major crimes unit. The unit prosecutes gun and violent crimes, immigration offenses, child exploitations and pornography crimes. Major crimes includes the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), which prosecutes major drug and money-laundering rings.


Federal prosecutor from 2000 to 2017. Was Gang Coordinator for San Antonio and the Western District of Texas responsible for investigating and prosecuting all major gangs, and Chief of the Major Crimes Unit.

State prosecutor from 1988-2000. Chief of the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office

Successfully prosecuted dozens of murder and capital murder cases, thousands of sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and burglary cases, obtained death sentences against four murderers.
